About Our School : School History
Elloughton School has been open since 1977. It now has 11 classes, 270+ children and over 40 members of staff who work extremely hard to provide the best possible education for our children.
Elloughton School was opened in April 1977. This was the year of the Queen's Silver Jubilee and as there were three huge horse chestnut trees in the school grounds at that time the school badge was made up of a horse chestnut tree leaf and a crown. The badge was re-designed in 1990 to incorporate these two images into one logo; this has remained the school badge ever since.
Mr Joe Pitts opened the school as headteacher and he was ably assisted by Mrs Norma White, the deputy head. They remained in charge of the school until 1989 when they both retired. Upon opening in 1977 the school had 35 children on roll in three classes. When Mr. David Mattinson was appointed in September 1989, the school had four classes and 99 children on roll. Mrs Christine Coates was appointed as Deputy Headteacher in January 1990. Consequently the school has only had two heads and two deputies since it was opened.
In 1990 the three horse chestnut trees had to be cut down, as they were diseased. However one of them was cut up and used to make a log play area for the children. The log play area was designed by the children and proved to be very popular. We have continued to develop the outdoor play facilities at Elloughton School and now have one of the best play areas in the East Riding of Yorkshire.
The school became very popular in the 1990's and there was also a number of local housing developments. This meant that the school expanded in pupil numbers and had to have new accommodation built onto it to take the increase in the number of children on roll. A new four class extension was opened in September 1998 and further developments have followed such as a new office, library, cloakroom and school entrance in September 2004, a staffroom and S.E.N. extension in 2000 and a new classroom in 2003. We have also added a double mobile classroom.
Throughout this time the numbers of children on roll have increased and the number of teachers followed suit. We now have over 270 children in eleven classes with thirteen teachers being employed along with approximately thirty other staff.
Although we have increased in size we have tried to maintain our close knit, friendly, family atmosphere and our school prides itself on the warmth of our welcome and the caring and friendly nature of our children and staff.
At Elloughton School we pride ourselves on our high standards of education, our inclusive family atmosphere and the excellent links we have established with our parents and the local community.
We have had three O.F.S.T.E.D. inspections since 1995 and all three have judged Elloughton school to be a good school. We all agree!

Elloughton School - Our Philosophy
Children enter our school at the beginning of the school year in which they are 5 years old. We have an Early Admission system at the school which caters for the needs of young children. As children move through the school they experience a range of exciting and innovative educational challenges which are meant to enrich, enthral and inspire them to become lifelong learners. We are concerned to develop children's curiosity and eagerness to learn. We aim to stimulate the imagination and thirst for learning of our children.
The core subjects of Literacy and Numeracy are well taught throughout the school but we believe in giving the children opportunities to apply the basic skills they are taught through working on structured themes which will encourage children to explore and learn about the world in which they live. Thus children throughout the school study a range of curriculum themes based on the 6 areas of learning. Wherever possible children are given opportunities to have first hand experience; through inviting visitors into school or organising trips and school visits in order to enhance their learning. A rich and stimulating curriculum is seen as the right of all our children.
We are especially proud of the internal and external environment of our school. Inside the school is always kept scrupulously clean and our teaching areas are light and airy, making them conducive to children's learning and providing excellent teaching areas for our staff.
Our external environment benefits from excellent play facilities for the children and has a large playing field, a school pond and a wildlife area. The play facilities allow the children to develop their co-ordination skills in a safe and structured environment.
We believe in involving parents in their children's learning and consequently provide three reports to parents each year. A feature of our reporting to parents is our Parents' Evenings where we show parents the child's Individual Pupil Record File which contains samples of children's work. We also encourage children to attend the second parents' evening of the year which occurs approximately half way through the school year. We see this as the main parents' evening when we have got to know the child really well and can set realistic targets for the rest of the year. In the summer term we have an Open Evening to show off the excellent work done by our children throughout the year.
We are proud of our school and believe that the only way we can do justice to our claim that we are an excellent school is to invite you to come and see for yourself. We look forward to welcoming you into Elloughton School.
